Advance Review: HOUSE season 7, episode 6 “Office Politics” | Cytat: | What are politicians best renowned for? How fitting to have House (Hugh Laurie) treat the New Jersey Senator’s campaign manager Joe Dugan (Jack Coleman) when he is faced with his own dilemma at work? Trust is very much the matter in this week’s installment, “Office Politics.” House must find out what behavior Dugan and the Senator indulged in that led to Dugan’s illness. Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) insists that House gives a real chance to the new female doctor, Dr. Masters (Amber Tamblyn)–albeit a brilliant third-year medical student–by hiring her for his team. House is conflicted by a critical decision that could break the trust Cuddy has in him as both his boss and his girlfriend, which could be detrimental to PPTH and jeopardize his relationship with Cuddy.
It’s been a long time since the team has offered such funny and interesting moments. Foreman (Omar Epps) and Taub (Peter Jacobson) treat their rookie teammate, Dr. Masters, to her first B&E (break-in and enter) when they go search Dugan’s house. Later, after a dare, both men engage in a basketball game that holds a few surprises. Foreman is curious to find out why Taub is acting strangely ever since meeting Masters and implies they have a connection. Chase (Jesse Spencer) is just as nosy but he is sleeping in and working a minimum amount of hours. He is too busy with his extracurricular life to be much of a presence to support the team. House doesn’t cut anybody any slack so I wonder how long Chase can get away with this.
Masters is an incredible addition to the team. I agree with Cuddy that she brings a “fresh perspective” and I like that she stirs up the boy’s club in a very original way. House, predictably, tests Masters’ abilities in diagnostics and checks out her bedside manners to determine who she really is. Masters’ interactions with House and the team are fantastic. At first, her straight-A student attitude annoys House and goes against his MO, until he realizes she’s able to use it to her own advantage, getting results by bending the rules. Masters has no problem either antagonizing House or Cuddy when she thinks it’s justified, or backing them up when needed. Whoever manages to stand up to House with good reason always earns at least a tad of House’s esteem. He tends to stomp on people who don’t measure up to him but young Masters is on equal footing with House, despite her moralistic touch, thanks to her quick acclimation seasoned by a grain of wit and sass.
Confronted with a complicated dead-end matter at work, House is puzzled and struggles to make the correct call. He is torn between his natural instincts of doing right by his patient at all costs and putting his relationship with Cuddy first, something he values greatly. He doesn’t plan to do anything out of character or that he hasn’t done a thousand times before. But the difference now is that his actions not only have professional consequences, but personal ones as well. It’s not a black or white situation. There is no simple explanation or resolution possible. House ignores Cuddy’s clear and rightful request which certainly can’t bode well with her. House has a point though; if he does nothing, his patient will likely die but the question doesn’t lie in the motivation. What is questionable is if the end justifies the means. The execution of it all is heartbreaking especially from Cuddy’s standpoint.
In the season premiere, “Now What,” House warned Cuddy he would probably do more “horrible things” to her. In “Office Politics,” we get the first glimpse of what he meant. Moreover, they’ve been talking about being honest and open with each other since the beginning of their relationship as a means of making it work for them. I notice as well that House is resorting to being his jerky self a bit more in many different ways with his team, with Masters and somehow with Cuddy. How Cuddy is able to cope with this side of House while in a relationship with him is yet to be seen. I am eager to find out how this is going to be handled by the writers.
Things are left completely in the dark regarding how this trouble will be addressed and it is worrisome for House and Cuddy. Yet, I strongly believe this can only lead to further development of their relationship but especially for House’s journey as he tries to make a better life for himself, failing but learning, on a very slow and bumpy road. |

The episode airing Nov. 15 does have some tense Huddy moments – not at all surprising given what transpires this coming Monday – but the main story involves the treatment of a family that may have (rather miraculously) come in contact with smallpox. In addition to some great stuff involving newcomer Amber Tamblyn’s med student and an extremely helpful Dutch cybersex operator (!), there’s also a story for Wilson that just might point his romance with Sam in an interesting direction.

AMBER Tamblyn almost turned down her new recurring role on House. | Cytat: | The actress — who recently joined the cast of the Fox medical drama as the socially awkward Martha Masters — says she nearly balked at the chance to star alongside Hugh Laurie because she didn’t want to appear in a medical drama.
“I thought, ‘I don’t want do a medical show, that doesn’t sound very fun to me’. I started asking my friends [about it] and they all went, ‘Are you an idiot? Have you ever seen it?’ I felt stupid for ever thinking that. I rented a bunch of the seasons… and I was really blown away,” she said.
Tamblyn said that the character is partly based on a real-life medical student, also called Martha Masters.
“They made her sign a release saying she wouldn’t sue Fox,” she said.
“I’m not saying anything out of turn or mean about her, but she’s incredibly brilliant and sometimes she can be very socially awkward.”
Amber recently insisted she doesn’t care what’s written about her in the tabloids. |
